Athletic will play their first Basque Derby of the season on Friday night when they welcome Real Sociedad to San Mamés. As always, the players are fired up for what will be an intense match and no one seems as enthusiastic about the fixture than Iñaki Williams. Speaking to the media on Wednesday the striker shared his desire to beat Real Sociedad and dominate the game.

“You are always supposed to win this game and that’s how people feel in Bilbao. We want to beat them. It motivates me and I want to drive them crazy. Hopefully this Friday I can score again and we beat them. We are looking forward to beating them, we want to prove that we are better. The Derby is the Derby, it’s not just any game. I still haven’t scored in the league but I’m close to doing it. With work and effort goals will come.”

Williams went on to share his thoughts that Real Sociedad should envy Athletic because of their unique player policy. The words likely won’t sit well with the rival club and the striker also pointed out that Athletic have finished higher in the table in recent years.

“I’m not afraid of anyone especially Real. We play with people from home and that’s what they should envy about us. I think we are going to play a great game. I don’t know if we have a better team, but in recent years we have finished ahead of them in the table. We have a great group and it’s time to prove it on the field.”

Looking to the game, Williams explained that Athletic’s pressing should cause problems for Real Sociedad. He believes that the support of the fans at San Mamés will give the team what they need to take all three points and make it a very difficult night for La Real.

“We are a high pressing team and we will try to drown them in our field like we did against Barcelona. If San Mamés is plugged in it will be even better. In the match against Barcelona the fans helped us a lot and we can do it again. San Mamés must be our fortress. Our hallmark is drowning opponents on our field and seizing our chances. We can play well and hopefully have a good night.”

Athletic have looked strong since Gaizka Garitano took over as manager back in December. With an entire summer to prepare Williams says that the team has gotten even better. The Lions have started the season well and hope to continue their run.

“Last season we tried to adapt to the rapid change of ideas but Gaizka came and we had a spectacular second half. The preseason has helped us to fine-tune details and do things better. We are better. When you start the season from scratch you do it with maximum enthusiasm and if we take points it gives you a push. We are a mentally strong team and we have to prove it this Friday.”

In closing, Williams was once again asked about Aritz Aduriz who will be retiring at the end of the season. “Aduriz helps me and gives me a lot” he answered. “If he continues to demand more from me I will be a better player. He is a great teacher and I try to learn from him as much as possible.” Although Aduriz isn’t expected to start against Real Sociedad, he and Iñaki Williams could both play a major role in taking all three points.
