Joseba Etxeberria “It’s A Good Result To Start The Season”
Joseba Etxeberria was victorious in his first game as manager of Bilbao Athletic. The Kumeak surrendered an early free kick goal to start the game, but turned things around in the second half with four goals to defeat Haro Deportivo 4-1 on the road. After the match, Etxeberria admitted that it was a difficult fixture but was satisfied with the adjustments that were made at the break.
“The first half was difficult and Haro were better than us. They hurt us out wide and on top of that they scored a goal. We made adjustments at the end of the first half and in the second we were more intense. We were more secure and were in control linking plays, being fluid, and creating danger.”
The manager believes the victory was a just result, but also had high praise for Haro Deportivo who are new to the Segunda B after earning promotion from the Tercera last year. Moving forward, it will be important to build on the win.
“The result is good because Haro had a very strong hour of play, but we wore them out and were able to score goals. It will continue to be difficult to win at this field. Haro are very well coached and have good players. They will be a strong team at home for sure. It’s a good result to start the season, but we have many things to improve and a lot of games ahead of us. We have to build on the second half because we suffered in the first.”
The Bilbao Athletic squad looks much different this year from last year’s team. Several players have either left or been promoted, with many from Basconia coming up to take their places. Etxeberria explained that it will take some time to work in the new players and expects them to continue improving.
“Many players have come from Basconia and we knew them well. This is a group with a winning mentality which is very important. There are many who are making their debuts at this level, but they will improve. At the start of the season it would be tricky to bring all these players together but we want to go little by little.
Bilbao Athletic will be back at Lezama on Sunday as they welcome Calahorra for their first home game of the season. “They build play very well, have technical players, and will create chances”, said Etxeberria looking ahead. “We have to defend well because we will have problems if we don’t. We will try to be organized and intense when attacking.” A win would give the Kumeak 6 points and keep them at the top of the table.
