Athletic Cadete A Win Morozov Cup With 1-0 Victory Over Benfica
Athletic’s Cadete A returned to St. Petersburg over the weekend to compete in the 14th edition of the Morozov Cup. The Kumeak made it all the way to the final last year before falling to Benfica. Ander Alaña’s squad was determined to have another strong run this year with hopes of bringing the cup back home to Bilbao.
The tournament began with Athletic defeating Olympiacos 3-0 in the first match of the group stage, followed by a 3-1 win over Juventus. Athletic then drew 2-2 with Zenit but it was enough for the Kumeak to finish at the top of their group. On Saturday, Athletic met RB Leipzig in the semifinals and the Basques were able to advance to the final with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Sunday’s final saw Athletic face off with Benfica in a rematch of last summer. Bittor Larrauri opened the scoring for the Kumeak in the first half the goal would prove decisive. Athletic held off their opponents and defeated Benfica 1-0 to win the Morozov Cup. Many of Athletic’s youth teams have won preseason tournaments this summer and look strong heading into the new season.
