Ander Capa Shines In Athletic’s Draw Against Getafe
Saturday’s match between Athletic and Getafe went exactly how everyone expected. The two sides were physical, great defensively, and kept each other from being able to create much of anything going forward. In the end, both teams scored one goal from a cross early in the first half and took one point from a fair result.
Despite the lack of chances Athletic played really well. Manager Gaizka Garitano warned that going to Getafe would be one of the most difficult games of the season and the Lions were up for the challenge. It took a full team performance to get a positive result against Getafe, but one player stood out above the rest.
Ander Capa spent the entire match battling with Marc Cucurella down the right wing and was, by far, the best player on the field. Throughout the full 90 minutes Capa had 94 touches on the ball, more than any other player, and was dispossessed just once. The 27-year-old won 3 tackles, 2 headers, made 2 interceptions, and cleared the ball three times. Going forward, Capa won 4 dribbles, drew 2 fouls, and assisted Raúl García’s opening goal with a sublime cross to the back post.
Whether defending or bombing forward and overlapping with the winger, Capa was everywhere throughout the match and caused constant problems for Getafe. A perfect fit for Gaizka Garitano’s system, Capa is quickly proving to be one of the best right-backs in La Liga this season.
Capa may have been the man of the match for Athletic, but others put in strong performances as well. Unai Nuñez won every ball that came his way, Yuri Berchiche was exceptional once again, and Raúl García constantly put himself in dangerous positions which demanded attention from Getafe. Athletic definitely would have preferred to take all three points, but a draw on the road against Getafe is a good result and the Zurigorri once again showed that they should be a force in La Liga this season.
