Gaizka Larrazabal “It’s The Day Of My Debut And Something I Will Never Forget”
Gaizka Larrazabal made his official first team debut on Saturday, coming on for Oscar De Marcos in the first half of Athletic’s 1-1 draw with Getafe. After the game, the 21-year-old admitted that it all happened so fast but his teammates were able to help him shake off the nerves and put in a good performance.
“It all went very fast so I wasn’t able to think about my first minutes. After Oscar’s injury I didn’t have time to warm up, but I found myself better in the second half. It’s the day of my debut and something I will never forget. These were my first minutes in the Primera. It’s normal to be a little nervous but my teammates helped me calm down and I was able to do what I like and showed myself.”
Before coming into the game, Larrazabal explained that he was told by Gaizka Garitano to put crosses into the box. Neither side was able to create any real danger going forward which complicated things. Larrazabal believes that he played well and will keep his shirt to commemorate his debut.
“I was told to run into space and put balls into the strikers, which I was able to do a couple of times. I took two corners, but they both fell short so I was angry with myself. We were forced to cross the ball from outside and even our goal came this way. I’m glad to be able to participate in the game and I think I’ve done well. I think of my family, who have always watched me and will always support me. I constantly think about that. I will keep this shirt at home.”
The injury to Oscar De Marcos could see Larrazabal start in Friday’s Basque Derby against Real Sociedad. Gaizka Garitano will have several options to choose from and will need to get the selection right if the Lions are going to take three more points at home in yet another massive match.
