CD Basconia Begin Season With Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Sodupe
CD Basconia looked great throughout the summer under new manager Patxi Salinas leaving many to believe that they could be one of the best teams in their Tercera group this year. The Basauritarras officially kicked off their season on Saturday at home against Sodupe and showed that their preseason was no fluke.
Key striker Ruben Azcona was unavailable due to being called up to Bilbao Athletic, leaving Josu Juste to lead the attack. Aitor Paredes and Beñat Prados were also included in the starting lineup despite spending the preseason with Joseba Etxeberria’s squad. Salinas fielded a strong team at Artunduaga in what proved to be a hard-fought victory.
The first half came to a close with the match still scoreless but the game broke wide open after the break. Midfielder Unai Naveira scored a wonder strike in the 50th minute to give Basconia a 1-0 lead before captain Youssouf Diarra added a second just five minutes later.
Even with a 2-0 lead the game was far from over. Sodupe managed to pull a goal back through a penalty but Basconia responded quickly with another goal from Diarra. The visitors would soon net their second but were unable to equalize in the end. Basconia protected their lead and took all three points with a 3-2 win over Sodupe.
The second half was full of action but also saw a very special moment. Juvenil A starlet Nico Williams, the younger brother of Iñaki Williams, made his Basconia debut. The forward came on in the 68th minute for Jon Cabo and played well. Williams will split time with Basconia this season and the Basauritarras will now turn their attention to next weekend’s trip to Deusto.
