Iñigo Lekue And Iñigo Martinez Return To Training At Lezama
Coming off of their big win over Barcelona to start the season, it’s been an important week for Athletic. Ibai Gómez was finally able to return to normal training and is expected to be available for Saturday’s trip to Getafe. Gaizka Garitano is slowly recovering players who have been dealing with injuries and Thursday’s session brought even more good news.
Iñigo Martinez was able to return to full training after spending the past few days participating on a limited basis. The defender had suffered from a muscle injury but could now be included in the squad for Saturday’s clash. It will be up to Garitano to decide whether or not to risk the 28-year-old who suffered a relapse at the end of the preseason.
Iñigo Lekue also rejoined the group after being sidelined with a thigh injury since the start of preseason. The right-back will now work to get back to match fitness but it shouldn’t be long until he’s available to the manager. Lekue is coming off of a disappointing campaign that saw him miss most of last season with a fractured ankle followed by lower back surgery. The 26-year-old came into the summer hoping to put the injuries behind him and fight for an important role in the team. That opportunity has finally arrived and Garitano is said to value Lekue’s versatility.
Iñigo Córdoba is also close to making a return. The winger returned to training on Monday but suffered a relapse when putting in a cross. On Thursday he was able to work with the ball and could be back with his teammates in the coming days. At this point, Córdoba is expected to be unavailable for Saturday trip to Getafe. Meanwhile, Aritz Aduriz sat out Wednesday’s training out of precaution but was back with the team on Thursday.
