Markel Susaeta Still Without A Club After Leaving Athletic
A new era has begun at Athletic following the departures of several key players over the summer. Ander Iturraspe, Mikel Rico, and Xabi Etxeita all left the club after not being offered contract renewals as did Markel Susaeta though the captain refused a new deal. Since then Iturraspe has joined Espanyol, Rico returned to Huesca, and Etxeita has signed with Getafe. Susaeta, however, is still in limbo.
As the summer progressed, Susaeta received interest from America, Mexico, Australia, Japan, and South Korea but a move never materialized. The 30-year-old is said to want to move abroad to avoid having to ever play against Athletic, though Real Zaragoza and Huesca have reached out to the former San Mamés star. Now a La Liga club has joined the discussion.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Espanyol have shown interest in signing Susaeta. With Iturraspe having recently joined the club it’s no surprise that the Catalans would consider a move for the former Athletic captain. Susaeta would bring veteran experience to a team that will be competing in the Europa League this season, though a move is considered unlikely.
Despite the interest, Susaeta still prefers to leave Spain. At the moment it appears as though going to the MLS is the most likely move for the winger but it may not necessarily happen soon or at all. In the meantime, Susaeta has been training alongside former teammates Fernando Llorente, Gorka Iraizoz, and Jonas Ramalho, who are also without a club, as he waits to decide his future.
