Ibai Gómez Returns To Training, Iñigo Martinez Close Behind
Athletic managed to topple Barcelona in the opening game of the La Liga season and did so without three important players. Ibai Gómez, Iñigo Martinez, and Iñigo Córdoba were all unavailable due to injuries but Gaizka Garitano stated that he expected at least one to return for Saturday’s trip to Getafe. Monday’s training session brought a glimmer of hope which grew the following day.
After joining his teammates for parts of Monday’s session, Ibai Gómez was a full participant in Tuesday’s training at Lezama. The winger had been dealing with a calf injury for the past two weeks and showed no signs of discomfort. Athletic even posted a video on social media showing Gómez scoring a goal and the expectation is that he will be in the team against Getafe.
Iñigo Martinez will likely be the next player to return to training. The defender was able to participate in parts of Tuesday’s session, mainly as an extra player during scrimmages, and could rejoin his teammates fully in the coming days. At this point, it’s unlikely that Martinez will be cleared for Saturday’s match as the club will be cautious with him following his recent muscle injury relapse.
Meanwhile, Iñigo Córdoba remains on the sidelines. The 22-year-old actually returned to training on Monday but eventually felt discomfort in his right knee when putting in a cross. The relapse has seen Córdoba begin working individually with trainer Xabier Clemente once again. Iñigo Lekue also continued to work apart from the group as he recovers from a thigh strain suffered at the beginning of the preseason.
