Ibai Gómez Close To Returning From Injury, Iñigo Córdoba Suffers Setback
Athletic had to do without three important players in Friday night’s big win over Barcelona. Iñigo Martinez, Ibai Gómez, and Iñigo Córdoba were all absent due to injuries but Gaizka Garitano remained hopefully that at least one would return for this weekend’s trip to Getafe. Monday’s training session had good news for the Lions, though it didn’t last long.
Iñigo Córdoba started the session fully reincorporated back into the group. The winger eventually took off the wrap on his right knee and showed no signs of an issue. That eventually changed, however, when Córdoba felt discomfort in his knee while putting in a cross and was forced to leave the session after receiving treatment from Dr. Angulo. At this point, Córdoba is doubtful for this weekend’s match.
On another note, Ibai Gómez sat out rondos to start training but joined his teammates for most of the rest of the session. All signs point to the winger fully returning something this week and, if that’s the case, he would theoretically be available for the trip to Getafe. Gaizka Garitano will likely be cautious with Gómez but his participation on Monday is certainly a good sign.
Lastly, Iñigo Martinez and Iñigo Lekue continued to train apart from the group. Both defenders are expected to miss this weekend’s match but Garitano is hopeful that they will be able to return soon. Martinez suffered a setback with a recent muscle injury and the club will be very cautious in bringing his back properly to avoid further issues.
