Ander Capa “When I Crossed The Ball I Saw That Aduriz Was Going For The Shot”
Ander Capa played an important role in Athletic’s 1-0 win over Barcelona, delivering the cross that Aritz Aduriz bicycled into the back of the net. It wasn’t easy to put the ball into the box but the right-back was able to find the striker and help the Lions celebrate a massive victory over the reigning champions.
“In that moment and that goal, your heart stops”, Capa recounted in an interview with Fuera de Juego on Monday night. “I’ve seen the play quite a few times. It’s a play that isn’t planned but comes when you least expect it. When I crossed the ball I saw that Aduriz was going for the shot, but then he leaned back, stopped, and then scores that wonder goal.”
The strike from Aduriz was stunning, but Capa’s cross was special as well. “The ball came very high from Raúl García’s pass and I could do was try to put it into the box”, the right-back explained. “Aduriz thanked me for the cross, but the genius was all him. Having Aduriz in the team is great for everyone. We all got quiet in the locker room after the game and as soon as he walked in we all cheered.”
Capa was understandably excited when asked about the significance of the victory. “Three points at San Mamés, and against the reigning champions…What else can you ask for”, he answered. “On Friday, San Mamés was a 10. The fans supported us at all times and never stopped. The entire team played well. Unai Simón was great, a top-level performance.”
Despite the big win over Barcelona, Capa notes that Athletic must remain vigilant. The Lions will face another tough opponent in Getafe on Saturday and will need to be at their best on the road to pick up more important points.
“We can’t relax or think we’ve accomplished something after the match against Barcelona. We have to continue like this and hopefully improve. Getafe is a team that plays a style similar to ours. It won’t be an easy match. We have been at a very good level at San Mamés but we need to give extra away from home. We will need those points as well.”
In closing, Capa is really enjoying the fact that he has the manager’s confidence. “On a personal level, I’m very happy. Since Gaizka arrived he’s given me the confidence that I didn’t have with Berizzo. I hope it stays this way. The Mister gives us freedom on the sides. If the ball is on your side you can push forward as far as you want but the other has to stay back.” Ander Capa and Athletic will have to put in another strong performance this weekend to keep pace at the top of the table and the Lions believe they are up for the challenge.
