Oihan Sancet “I’m Very Happy To Debut At San Mamés”
Athletic’s 1-0 win over Barcelona on Friday night was an exciting way to kick off the new season. The Lions were at their best in every way and the game was full of special moments, including a debut. Twenty minutes before Aritz Aduriz’s bicycle kick, 19-year-old Oihan Sancet took the field for the first time by replacing Oscar De Marcos. After the match the midfielder spoke with AthleticTV and shared his excitement over fulfilling a childhood dream.
“I’m very happy to debut at San Mamés and also get the victory. All of my teammates congratulated me on the debut. Of course there are always nerves, but I’m proud to play on this field and above all for Aduriz’s goal which gave us the victory. The most important thing was getting the three points and that’s why I’m happy. You always dream of a debut like this at San Mamés. The atmosphere is amazing and that always helps you.”
Debuting at San Mamés is already a big deal, but doing so against Barcelona brings added pressure. “Before going on Garitano told me to squeeze up, be calm, and do what I know”, Sancet explained. “He told me to trust myself and go play. The match called for more defensive work and in the end those three points came. Playing more? That’s a matter for the Mister. I will do everything possible to work and fight and, if he calls on me, I will always do my best.”
Sancet has long been considered a future Athletic star ever since he arrived at Lezama as a 15-year-old and he definitely remembers where he’s come from. “I want to recognize all the coaches that I’ve had at Lezama”, said the midfielder. “They have helped me a lot since I was young and I wouldn’t be here without them. It’s all thanks to them.” Oihan Sancet is expected to split time between the first team and Bilbao Athletic this season but has all the qualities needed to quickly start challenging for a starting role at San Mamés.
