Aritz Aduriz’s bicycle kick stunned Barcelona on Friday night. The 38-year-old’s first touch after coming on late in the second half beat the goalkeeper and gave the Lions all three points at San Mamés. After the match, Aduriz emphasized the importance of starting the season strong and explained that he had to try a difficult shot to actually have a chance on goal.

“The team has been amazing, especially Iñaki. There’s no better way to start the season than by adding three points against Barcelona. I’m very happy to help the team. I said that I would always be available to Athletic and the team, that I’m here to help until the final day, and today I’ve been able to prove it. It’s all about trying. I sensed where the ball was going to go and the only way to finish was like that.”

San Mamés has long been considered one of the toughest stadiums in La Liga and proved it once again on Friday night. Aduriz praised the fans for their support and explained that he is proud to be able to retire from his boyhood club at the end of the season.

“The atmosphere of San Mamés is always insurmountable, but today the fans took it even further. The San Mamés is really special. The fans always support us and they were the 12th player for us today. I wish you could all feel what it’s like to score at San Mamés. It’s impossible not to miss this atmosphere but as I said the other day it’s special to be able to choose when and where you hang up your boots. I’m grateful to be able to do it here.”

It’s never easy facing Barcelona, especially in the first game of the season. Barcelona are a strong team and in the first half we went toe-to-toe with them”, Aduriz explained. “They always make you suffer.” The striker also celebrated the debut of Oihan Sancet. “Athletic’s base is young players. You have to give them confidence and have patience with them. They will help us a lot throughout the year.” The season may have just begun, but the Lions are off to a thunderous start and look to be an early favorite to challenge for Europe.
