Peru Nolaskoain “I Was Clear That I Wanted To Play For Deportivo”
Despite being told early on that he would be sent out on loan, Peru Nolaskoain spent nearly the entire preseason with Athletic. The 20-year-old finally joined Deportivo last week and was officially presented on Wednesday. When asked about the offers, Nolaskoain revealed that he only wanted to move to Deportivo and hopes to help the club achieve promotion this year.
“There was a lot of talk in the press about Zaragoza but there were no meetings. I was clear that I wanted to play for Deportivo from the moment they entered the picture. I had to wait, but I always said to work out a deal with them. I’ve talked to Carmelo for almost two months and he has plans for me. From the first moment I felt loved and this is an exciting challenge to return the team to where it should be. Together we can do it.”
Deportivo will kick off their season on Sunday at home against Real Oviedo and Nolaskoain hopes to be in the lineup. After a long summer of training, Nolaskoain says he’s in great shape and ready to be on the field.
“I’m available now. I’ve done the preseason and hopefully I can play on Sunday. It’s very important to start winning. We will have to work hard because it seems like it’s easier to play at home, but that’s not the case. A difficult opponent is coming and I hope the fans push us a lot at Riazor.”
Nolaskoain was eventually asked about what position he will play while on loan. “Last year I played as a center-back at Athletic”, he began. “It was a new position because I’ve always played in a double pivot. I don’t know where I’m most comfortable, but I think I can perform well in both positions and that’s a good thing.” Peru Nolaskoain values his versatility as a player and is looking forward to having regular minutes this season as he seeks to prove that he’s ready for an important role at San Mamés.
