Iñigo Martinez, Ibai Gómez, And Iñigo Córdoba Continue To Miss Training With Injuries
As Athletic continue preparing for Friday night’s La Liga opener against Barcelona the Lions moved Tuesday’s training session to San Mamés. Only the first 15 minutes were open to the media as Garitano will spend the rest of week getting the team ready in private. Kicking off the season against the reigning champions is never easy, but injuries could make it even more difficult.
Iñigo Martinez, Ibai Gómez, and Iñigo Córdoba have all been unable to train over the past few days and worked outside the group once again on Tuesday. Gómez has been dealing with a calf problem, Martinez suffered a relapse of a recent muscle injury, and Córdoba was seen wearing a wrap on his right thigh. With just three days until the first game it’s unlikely that the trio will be available.
Even if one or more are able to return to training the chances of being fully cleared to play are slim. Garitano will likely not want to risk further injury as well which means that others will have to step up. Unai Nuñez will be expected to start in place of Martinez alongside Yeray but there are several options to replace the wingers. Assuming Iker Muniain starts on the left, Gaizka Larrazabal or Oscar De Marcos could feature as the right-wing.
As far as the rest of the lineup is concerned, Iñaki Williams will lead the attack while Dani García and Unai López are slated to partner in the midfield with Raúl García playing further ahead. Ander Capa and Yuri Berchiche will bookend the defense but Garitano has refused to name a starting goalkeeper at this point. Unai Simón was chosen against Roma, suggesting he will be in the lineup to start the season, though nothing has been confirmed.
