Iñaki Williams’ commitment to Athletic can never be doubted. After his family immigrated to the Basque Country Williams was born in Bilbao, grew up an Athletic fan, and the club became his home. The striker has regularly stated that he has no interest in leaving and wants to become a legend at San Mamés.

The statements haven’t just been empty words. Williams has meant it and proven it. In January of 2018, after already rejecting one offer from Liverpool, the English side we’re pursuing the striker for a second time. Once again, Williams turned it down and signed an improved contract with Athletic running through 2025 with an €80 million release clause that would increase every year until it reaches €105 million.

Last week, Williams found himself back in the headlines with just hours until the England transfer window closed. Reports claimed that Manchester United were willing to pay the 25-year-old’s €88 million release clause but he declined. On Monday the striker further committed his future to Athletic by signing a new and improved contract that will run through 2028. The new deal also increased his release clause to €135 million which is the highest in club history.

“I am a lion and this is my home”, Williams stated in a video released by the club to celebrate his renewal. “I’m happy here and this is where I want to be. This is my home and I have everything I want here. It’s a pride for me to remain linked to this great club that has given me everything. I have always said that I am where I want to be. I’m very happy in Bilbao, I’m very happy at Athletic, and I can only prove it with work, effort, and trying to help the team with goals.”

Williams continued by thanking the club for their support and confidence in him as a player. “Athletic has always opted for me, it has given me everything, and I feel this is my home. I only have words of thanks. Obviously, the only thing I can do is make this renewal official is returning to the club the effort they have made for me. Thank you for supporting me, especially in bad times. This is a day to enjoy and be happy. Hopefully great things can come because I want to make Athletic even bigger, if that’s even possible. I’m very proud to be part of Athletic, of this great family. As Aduriz said, we are a great gang.”

Reports claim that the deal was finalized several weeks ago with both the player and club choosing to wait until closer to the beginning of the season to make the announcement. Williams will have a formal presentation and press conference later in the evening which will be held at 5:00pm at the Jose Iragorri press room at San Mamés.
