Iñigo Córdoba Returns To Training, Ibai Gómez And Iñigo Martinez Miss Out
Athletic’s La Liga opener against Barcelona is just days away and the Lions are taking advantage of every single training session to ensure they are ready for the clash. After Monday, every other session leading up to the match will be held in private but fans did have the chance to watch the players at Lezama on Sunday. Gaizka Garitano put the squad through intense exercises, though not everyone was present.
Once again, Ibai Gómez was unable to train. The winger missed the final two preseason friendlies with calf discomfort and has been sidelined for the last few days. Garitano has said that the club doesn’t believe it’s anything serious but if he continues to miss training it’s very likely he won’t be available for Friday’s match. Interestingly, Iñigo Martinez was also absent but the club has yet to provide any medical report so the defender could have just been given a day of rest. As of now, the defender is expected to train on Monday.
Iñigo Córdoba was able to return to training on Sunday after missing the last session. Sources claim that the winger was given a rest day on Friday, however, he did leave training early along with Aritz Aduriz suggesting that he may be dealing with some minor issue. Iñaki Williams was able to train with complete normalcy as he is still suffering from an infected toenail.
Iñigo Lekue continued to work with trainer Xabi Clemente apart from the group and is hoping to return to training in early September. The right-back has been recovering from a thigh strain which he suffered at the beginning of the preseason. Athletic will be back at Lezama on Monday at 10:30am which will be open to the public. The remaining training sessions will be closed as the Zurigorri get ready to host Barcelona at San Mamés.
