Christophe Atangana, Antxon Jaso, And Sergio García Leave On Loan
Lezama has often been referred to as a goalkeeper factory. Throughout history, the Atheltic academy has produced many top-level goalkeepers and the same is certainly true today. Unai Simón has already earned a role in the first team, Hodei Oleaga is expected to spend the season on loan in the Segunda, and many others are making their way up the youth system.
The issue with having so many talented goalkeepers is that there aren’t enough minutes to go around for everyone. Last year Christophe Atangana was promoted from CD Basconia but had to leave on loan. The Cameroonian joined Leioa and featured in six games before returning to Lezama at the beginning of preseason training.
Atangana started in goal for the team’s first preseason friendly, a 4-2 win over Amorebieta, but hasn’t seen the field since. Manager Joseba Etxeberria has instead put his faith in newcomer Jokin Ezkieta while also calling up Julen Agirrezabala and Aritz De Miguel from CD Basconia. Ander Iru, who was promoted to Bilbao Athletic this summer, has yet to be included in the squad for a friendly but will act as the backup to Ezkieta.
On Monday Athletic officially announced that Atangana has returned to Leioa on loan where he will have the chance to compete for regular minutes in the Segunda B. The 19-year-old isn’t the only one leaving though as CD Basconia goalkeeper Sergio García has also departed. García returns to Zamudio where he spent last season playing on loan in the Tercera.
Lastly, Antxon Jaso has joined Amorebieta on loan for the upcoming season. The left-back, who can also play centrally, was signed from Burgos over the summer and will now battle for consistent playing time in the Segunda B with hopes of returning to Bilbao Athletic next year ready for an important role in the team. With squads full of promising talent, Bilbao Athletic and CD Basconia could see more players leave on loan before the start of the season.
