Asier Villalibre Informed That He Will Be Sent On Loan This Season
Asier Villalibre’s return to Bilbao Athletic last season proved to be the best thing for the young striker. Having struggled to perform during three separate loan spells, the Lezama product rediscovered his best football and scored 23 goals to lead the Kumeak and sign a new contract. This summer Villalibre was hoping to earn a permanent place in the first team and it seems as though a decision has finally been made.
Throughout the preseason Villalibre has been competing with Kenan Kodro for the third striker spot in the squad. Aritz Aduriz and Iñaki Williams are fixed, which means that only one more forward would be kept. As the weeks passed by, Kodro was given more minutes in friendlies but Gaizka Garitano insisted that he had yet to make a decision. Regardless of his statements, the writing has been on the wall.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Garitano and Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta have now informed Villalibre that he will be sent on loan. The 21-year-old has already attracted interest from Mirandés, Elche, and Almeria while Barcelona B have also reached out to Athletic.
It’s highly unlikely that Villalibre will join Barcelona B as that would keep the striker in the Segunda B. Athletic have great relationships with the other three interested clubs and Mirandés manager Andoni Iraola has already admitted that he’s open to bringing Villalibe into the team. With Aritz Aduriz announcing that he will retire at the end of the season, Villalibre will have the opportunity to play regular minutes if he leaves on loan and prove that he’s ready for an important role at San Mamés.
