Aritz Aduriz Announces He Will Retire At The End Of The Season
Aritz Aduriz has been an example to every young player that comes through Lezama. Throughout his career the striker has been dedicated to the club, a hard worker, and his love for the game has continued to grow. Unlike most footballers, Aduriz has played his best after the age of 30 but his career will soon be coming to an end.
“This will be my last year as a professional, I will retire from football at the end of the season”, Aduriz said to start Friday’s press conference “I am especially excited to retire from Athletic. I feel very happy to be able to do this with Athletic. Choosing where you end your career is an incredible privilege.”
Aduriz delivered the announcement with a smile but held back tears. The striker went on to say that he chose to announce his decision now in order to “avoid media rumors and focus on the team’s objectives, which is the most important thing.” As always, Aduriz wants what is best for the club.
“This is a decision that I could have made last year, but the circumstances made it happen this way”, he continued. “It has been a very thoughtful decision with my family and myself. I will continue giving everything, my very best, and helping the team this year in every way that I possibly can. I’m at peace and will enjoy every moment. I don’t expect any physical issues. I feel great and will take on the burden of the season.”
A product of Lezama, Aduriz is currently in the top-20 of all-time appearances for Athletic and will enter the season having scored 171 goals which put him sixth in club history. The 38-year-old could overtake Iraragorri (179) with a few goals this year. Regardless of how the season plays out, Aritz Aduriz will retire an Athletic legend and one of the best to ever wear the Zurigorri shirt.
