Four Clubs Interested In Signing Asier Villalibre On Loan
Gaizka Garitano has a plethora of options in attack this season, but there won’t be room for everyone. Iñaki Williams and Aritz Aduriz are the clear choices to lead the front line while Asier Villalibre and Kenan Kodro are still competing for the third spot in the squad. With only two friendlies left to be played a decision should be coming soon.
Throughout the preseason Villalibre and Kodro have rarely seen the field. Neither striker has really been given the opportunity to convince the manager, though one will stay in the team while the other is expected to leave on loan. After a record year with Bilbao Athletic where Villalibre scored 23 goals, many fans want to see the 21-year-old in the squad even though minutes would be few and far between.
Garitano has yet to make a decision, but it’s likely that Kodro will be kept and Villalibre will leave. It’s very important that Villalibre continue playing regular minutes this season and that won’t happen at San Mamés. Meanwhile, Kodro appears satisfied with a limited role in the team and has top-flight experience. While the Mister analyzes both strikers, clubs are already lining up in hopes of signing Villalibre before the start of the season.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, four clubs have already contacted Athletic with interest in signing Villalibre. Almería, Elche, and Racing are all willing to guarantee consistent minutes and have strong relationships with Athletic which could facilitate a move. On the other hand, Barcelona B is the other club pursuing the striker though Athletic don’t want him to spend another season in the Segunda B and have all but ruled out this option.
Villalibre still has the chance to convince Garitano and stay at San Mamés this season. The 21-year-old has publically stated that he doesn’t want to leave on loan again and would be happy to sit behind Williams and Aduriz where he could continue learning. Asier Villalibre is viewed as one of the most promising players for the future and Athletic will have to handle the situation well to ensure that he reaches his potential.
