Athletic played their last major friendly of the preseason on Wednesday, drawing 2-2 with Roma in Italy. It was arguably the best overall performance from the Lions this summer and showed that the team is ready for the start of the La Liga season. After the game, Dani García admitted that the squad is feeling confident going into the final week of preparations.

“The sensations are very good”, he told reporters. “There aren’t any injuries and we are all at a great physical level. There is a lot of competition in the team. We came from an intense week with a heavy workload and we played against a great team. It was a good match for us.”

Raúl García also shared his thoughts on the preseason as a whole. “We still have room to give more but we are already recognizable as a team”, stated the midfielder. “The preseason has been quite good and we are physically ready.” The 33-year-old recently signed a contract renewal through 2021 and is expected to play a major role in the team again this season.

Before the game, news broke that Manchester United are willing to pay Iñaki Williams’s €88 million release clause. The interest comes as no surprise though Dani García doesn’t think much of it. “Williams is very calm”, he explained. “If I were United or Madrid I would sign him, but we are calm that he isn’t going anywhere and proud that he’s on our team. These things need to be valued more so that players like Williams stay with us and have pride in wearing this shirt.”

Likewise, Raúl García believes that the striker will be staying at San Mamés. “It’s his decision, but we understand clearly that he is here because he wants to be here. He has clubs that want him because he’s a great player, but I’m not really concerned about it.” Iñaki Williams has rejected offers from Liverpool over the past few years and is expected to turn down Manchester United’s offer if one is formally presented.
