Previewing Roma vs Athletic Club
Athletic have just two friendlies left this summer with La Liga set to kick off next weekend at San Mamés. The Lions will host Barcelona to start the season and will use Wednesday’s match against Roma as a tune-up game before the big night. It may technically be a friendly, but the trip to Italy will be taken very seriously.
Gaizka Garitano has called up 18 players and is expected to test a starting lineup that could be fielded against Barcelona. Based on Tuesday’s training session at Lezama, Unai Simón will begin the game in goal over Iago Herrerín. The rest of the team comes as no surprise with Ander Capa, Yeray, Iñigo Martinez, and Yuri Berchiche making up the defense.
Dani García and Unai López figure to partner in the midfield once again with Raúl García playing a more attacking role. Iker Muniain and Iñigo Córdoba will be out wide as Iñaki Williams leads the attack. Mikel Vesga and Oihan Sancet were also called up for the match, leaving behind Beñat and Mikel San José for Thursday’s friendly against Mirandés.
When it comes to the preseason results truly don’t matter. What coaches really want to see are good performances and no injuries, but a big win against Roma would go a long way towards building confidence ahead of the league opener at Sam Mamés. The summer is almost over and real football is just around the corner.
Projected Athletic Club XI: Unai Simón, Ander Capa, Yeray, Iñigo Martinez, Yuri Berchiche, Dani García, Unai López, Iker Muniain, Raúl García, Iñigo Córdoba, and Iñaki Williams
