Iñigo Lekue Continues Recovery From Thigh Injury
Athletic have been relatively fortunate this summer when it comes to injuries. Iñigo Martinez and Beñat both suffered muscle injuries, but have since recovered and will enter the season fully healthy. Gaizka Garitano has had most of the squad available throughout the preseason, though one player is still on the sidelines.
Iñigo Lekue suffered a thigh injury at the end of training on 9 July, less than one week into the preseason. The 26-year-old missed most of last year with a fractured ankle followed by back surgery and came into the summer hoping to earn his place and put the issues in the past. Lekue feared the worst when he went down last month, but was only diagnosed with a moderate strain.
The right-back was lucky to avoid a more serious injury, though he still hasn’t been able to return to training. According to sources, Lekue is expected to rejoin the group soon and could be available for matches in early September. For now, he will continue his rehab with the goal of being back in the field as quickly as possible and fighting for minutes.
