Andoni Goikoetxea Returns To Athletic As Representative And Foundation Ambassador
Andoni Goikoetxea is one of the greatest defenders to ever play for Athletic. The Butcher of Bilbao featured in 369 games for the club, scoring 44 goals, and was one of the key players that helped the team win the 1983 and 1984 league titles. Since retiring from football in 1990 he’s held many coaching jobs but has always stayed very close to Athletic. Now, the club legend is officially returning home.
Athletic announced on Tuesday that Goikoetxea has returned to the club as a representative and ambassador for the club’s Foundation which is overseen by Juan Carlos Ercoreca. As a representative, Goikeotxea has been given the responsibility of coordinating the Association of former Athletic players to “keep the collective memory alive, increase the presence of ex-Lions in social events and activities, and promote the culture of the Foundation.”
Since the Presidential election in December, Aitor Elizegi and Rafa Alkorta have had made it a priority to bring former players back to the club. Some have returned in coaching roles while others are working as part of the Board of Directors. The return of Andoni Goikoetxea is certainly very exciting for the club and will continue to connect the past with the future.
