Racing 2-1 Athletic Club: Luca Zidane Shuts Down Lions At El Sardinero
Coming off of a hard-fought win over West Ham on Saturday, Athletic were back in action on Sunday when they traveled to El Sardinero for a friendly against Racing. Gaizak Garitano left behind most of his key players but the Lions were still expected to be in a strong performance. Athletic had yet to lose a match this summer and Racing weren’t going to go down easily.
Just ten minutes into the match the hosts would open the scoring. A long cross Aitor Buñuel found Yoda who put a header into the back of the net. Iñigo Martinez would then have a chance to equalize from a corner kick but his header was saved by Racing goalkeeper Luca Zidane. Aritz Aduriz would eventually see two of his own headers stopped before the break.
Iago Herrerín made a huge save to start the second half before Gaizka Garitano began to make changes. The introduction of Oihan Sancet and Iñigo Vicente opened up the game and led to several chances. In the 65th minute Gaizka Larrazabal was sent through on goal but Zidane made yet another terrific save. The same thing would happen to Vicente shortly after.
Racing would eventually have to take off Zidane due to an injury which opened up things even more for the Lions. Athletic would finally equalize in the 85th minute when Vicente sent Larrazabal into space with a sublime pass. The winger then crossed the ball into Asier Villalibre but the Racing defender would be the one to put the ball into the back of the net.
The match looked to be heading for a draw, but Racing weren’t done. The hosts capitalized on space in the box to score a second goal in the 88th minute which would stand until the final whistle. Athletic were handed their first loss of the preseason and will now start preparing for Wednesday’s friendly against Roma which should include the return of key players.
