Gaizka Garitano “I’m Pleased With The Team’s Work Despite Playing Three Games In Four Days”
Athletic suffered their first defeat of the summer on Sunday, falling 2-1 to Racing Club at El Sardinero. Gaizka Garitano had left out most of the key players but still demanded a strong performance from his team. Speaking with reporters after the match, the Mister admitted that he was pleased with how hard the group worked and was impressed with Racing goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
“It was a very nice game with a lot of rhythm. It was very good training, great for both teams. The result was a shame, but I’m pleased with the pace of the game and the team’s work despite playing three games in four days. It’s a pity we couldn’t get the second goal. The goalkeeper did very well. He didn’t make mistakes and had some good stops despite taking risks. They have a goalkeeper who plays well with the ball at his feet, almost like a field player, but what I was most impressed with is how he saved four shots inside the box. We also have two good goalkeepers and either can play.”
Several Athletic players have already been told that they will leave on loan, but moves have yet to materialize. Garitano shared his frustration but believes that exits should be coming very soon.
“It’s complicated every day with thirty players. It worries me because there are many in training and because there are players that we can’t put in friendlies. The club is working on possible departures and many of them know they have to leave. We will define the squad in the next few days. Most of the players who aren’t going to continue with us already know it. We know those who are going to stay and those who aren’t. Now we have to work on the exits. When players find a good accommodation we will announce it. Meanwhile, the logical thing is to say nothing.”
Athletic will now begin preparing for Wednesday’s friendly against Roma and Garitano revealed that Yeray could even be available for the trip. The defender suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday’s win over West Ham but it doesn’t appear to be anything serious. With the La Liga season kicking off in just under two weeks the Zurigorri are putting in the final preparations to be ready to host Barcelona at San Mamés.
