Athletic’s 1-1 draw against Numancia on Thursday saw several young players get the chance to impress the manager. With a big friendly against West Ham coming up this weekend, Gaizka Garitano chose to rest his star players but the Lions were still able to come away with a hard-fought draw. After the match, the Mister explained that some of the younger players will have to leave on loan.

“I don’t want to have a young player here who isn’t going to be playing”, he explained. “If we see that they aren’t going to get many chances with us, the best thing is for them to look for minutes and opportunities to be on the field. We are talking internally. When something is official we will communicate it.” Iñigo Vicente, Peru Nolaskoain, and Hodei Oleaga have all reportedly been informed that they will be sent out on loan.

Cristian Ganea made the bench for the first time this summer but failed to see the field. “It’s been a long time since we told Cristian that he won’t have a place”, said Garitano. Several Segunda clubs are interested in the Romanian but a move has yet to materialize. “Today we gave minutes to the players that I wanted to see how they were doing. Villalibre? We will decide. A forward will always have safe options and he’s fighting for a position.”

Looking at the match, Garitano admitted that he expected the players to be a bit sluggish. “We already anticipated that we were going to be tired because of the intense work this week. Between training and games it’s going to be an intense week. The most important thing is that we keep adding minutes and are doing it without injuries.” The Zurigorri have yet to lose a game during the preseason and will face their toughest competition yet when they travel to London on Saturday for the BetWay Cup against West Ham.
