Beñat “The Key Is Starting The Season Well”
With preseason in full swing Athletic are determined to start the La Liga campaign much better than last year. The Lions know they must get off to a strong start if they are going to compete for Europe. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Beñat explained the importance of being ready for the opening game against Barcelona.
“We are going from less to more and that is important to start the league well. The key Is starting the season well. It’s better to speak about Europe later. Last season we didn’t start how we wanted and that weighs on you a lot. It made us suffer the entire year.”
Having the entire summer to prepare has helped the team adapt to Gaizka Garitano’s system. The Basques will continue to press high up the pitch and try to force turnovers in dangerous areas.
“Garitano asks us to play with high pressure to suffocate our opponent. We identify a lot with this system. We are very intense and we will work to make the other team uncomfortable. We want to cause damage with our high pressure.”
Beñat has been an integral part of Athletic for nearly a decade but isn’t guaranteed a starting role this year. The competition is good for the team and to improve individually and collectively”, he admitted. With so much talent in the midfield Garitano must find the right partnerships to help lead the team to a top-six finish.
