Bilbao Athletic celebrate Antonio Salado’s second half goal against Arenas (AC)

Bilbao Athletic played their second friendly of the preseason on Tuesday by hosting local rivals Arenas at Lezama. Manager Joseba Etxeberria tinkered with the lineup from the previous match, which included goalkeeper Jokin Ezkieta. It was a hard-fought match that saw both sides score one goal as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

From the opening whistle Bilbao Athletic were in control, but it would be Arenas who opened up the scoring. A fine piece of individual skill from Oscar Francis Borg gave the visitors a 1-0 lead after just nine minutes. The Kumeak quickly started pushing for an equalizer and nearly found it in the 30th minute when Jon Morcillo blasted a shot from outside the box which was miraculously saved by the goalkeeper at the top corner.

Arenas would start the second half strong and nearly doubled their lead when a header from a corner kick struck the crossbar. Bilbao Athletic would finally respond in the 55th minute after being awarded a penalty. Andoni Tascón saw his effort from the spot saved, but Antonio Salado was there to clean it up and pull the Kumeak level. From there, neither side was able to take control and the match ended in a deserved draw.

Bilbao Athletic are still finding their rhythm under a new manager as Etxeberria looks to give everyone minutes to prove their worth. The Kumeak will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on Haro Deportivo who will also be in the same group in the Segunda B this season.
