Athletic Return To Lezama After A Week In Germany
Athletic’s excursion to Germany was a massive success. The team trained at least twice every single day and were in the environment to fully focus on implementing more of Gaizka Garitano’s system ahead of the new season. Two friendlies against Paderborn and Borussia Monchengladbach also gave the squad the chance to put everything into practice and show their improvement.
After returning on Sunday the players were given the day off on Monday. It was an intense week in Germany and the Lions enjoyed the chance to unwind and rest. The relaxation didn’t last long, however, as the team returned to training at Lezama on Tuesday evening.
As expected, Iñigo Martinez was able to fully train with his teammates after overcoming a muscle injury. The defender looked strong and could even be available for Thursday’s friendly against Numancia. Meanwhile, Iñigo Lekue continued to work separately due to his own muscle injury. Gaizka Larrazabal also had an injury scare when his ankle was stamped on, but after a few minutes of medical attention the winger jumped back in for the remainder of the session.
Athletic will train twice on Wednesday before facing off with Numancia the following day. There will be just one session on Friday before the team travels to England on Saturday for a friendly against West Ham followed by a match against Racing on Sunday. The Lions will continue preparing for their La Liga opener which will take place at San Mamés on 17 August against Barcelona.
