Gaizka Larrazabal “The Ball Dropped To Me And I Was Able To Score”
Gaizka Larrazabal opened up the scoring against Paderborn just one minute into Saturday’s friendly, netting his first goal for Athletic. The winger has been working hard this summer to earn his place in the team and is excited to be living his childhood dream. Larrazabal’s goal was certainly impressive, but it was also unexpected.
“I went for it all”, explained the 21-year-old. “The ball dropped, almost unexpectedly to me, and I was able to score. It was one of the fastest goals I’ve ever scored. Last year I scored after 25 seconds in the Derby against Real. I have to keep adding goals.”
It’s been a busy summer for Larrazabal who not only has been promoted to the first team, but also played with the Basque National Team in Panama. Despite his age, the winger is working hard to earn minutes and is enjoying the experience of playing at the top level.
“I’ve been training hard and I always want to help the team. We knew it was going to be an intense game because many of their players are great athletes and were going to push us for 90 minutes. It was a game of blows, clashes, and fights and it makes you excited. I liked the experience because it shows very clearly what is waiting for you. This level demands the most from you.”
While most players enjoy time off during the summer, Larrazabal spent most days working out with teammate and friend Iñigo Córdoba. The pair want to compete for starting roles and understand that scoring goals is absolutely necessary
“We are very good friends and we always support each other. We talk a lot about what we have to do to be starters and we know we have to score goals. I’m very happy that he’s here and thankful for his advice.” Larrazabal has looked great during friendlies this summer and is showing that he has the quality to play at San Mamés.
