Yeray “Athletic’s Philosophy Is Untouchable”
Yeray has established himself as one of the best defenders in La Liga and began the summer as a top name in the transfer market. Clubs like Atlético Madrid were said to be willing to pay the 24-year-old’s release clause but Yeray had no plans to leave Athletic. The defender recently renewed his contract with the Lions through 2026 and explained in an interview on Wednesday that there was never any question about his intentions.
“There were no problems with the issue of my renewal”, said the defender. “I was always clear that only I wanted to continue playing at San Mamés.” Yeray also believes that Athletic have the quality to challenge for a place in Europe this season. “We have the team to deal with anyone. Next summer there is also an ambitious goal with the European Championship. I hope that I can compete in that tournament.”
In closing, the Lezama graduate was asked about the club’s unique player policy and had a strong opinion. “Athletic’s philosophy will never change”, he answered. “It is untouchable. Athletic plays with players from here and that has a lot of merit. It’s a very good thing for us and it’s clear to everyone.” Yeray is one of many academy graduates currently playing for the first team, showing the strength of the club’s philosophy.
