Unai López, Iñigo Vicente, And Oihan Sancet Making The Most Of Their Preseason Chances
Going into the summer several Athletic players knew they would have to fight for their place in the team. With 33 players in the squad, there wouldn’t be room for everyone and several will have to leave on loan in order to play regular minutes. The Zurigorri have been training for four weeks now, having played one friendly against Arenas, and three Lions are making the most of their chances.
Unai López started the friendly against Arenas and was arguably the best player on the field in the first half. His passing, vision, and creativity were impressive and he displayed confidence leading the midfield. The match aside, López has been having a very strong preseason and has looked great in training. Gaizka Garitano has already told the 23-year-old that he will have a role in the team this season and he’s even taken the Number 8 shirt.
Oihan Sancet and Iñigo Vicente have a harder path to staying with the first team. Still young, the pair needs consistent minutes to continue developing but they have displayed the quality they can bring to the team. Like López, Sancet and Vicente have really impressed during the preseason and were the two best players in the 6-1 win over Arenas. Mature beyond their years and capable of scoring goals and creating chances, the two Lezama graduates are well on their way to convincing Garitano.
This week in Germany will go a long way in deciding who will stay at San Mamés and who will leave on loan. With friendlies coming up this weekend, these three players will have at least two more chances to prove to the Mister that they should stay in the team. Unai López has already earned his place and, regardless of what happens, Oihan Sancet and Iñigo Vicente are showing that they can become stars for Athletic Club.
