La Liga Clubs Monitoring Mikel Vesga’s Situation At Athletic
Mikel Vesga spent last season on loan with Leganés and once again showed that he can play at a high level in La Liga. The midfielder impressed manager Gaizka Garitano, though his place at Athletic this season isn’t a sure thing. Vesga must still earn his role in the team and failing to do so would likely see the 26-year-old leave once again.
Athletic’s midfield is full of talent which complicates Vesga’s chances of convincing the manager. Dani García, Beñat, Mikel San José, and Unai López are all guaranteed places in the squad this season. Meanwhile, Oihan Sancet is also battling for a place in the team and may very well be Vesga’s main competition. It will be up to Garitano to make the decision.
Vesga is determined to prove himself worthy of staying at San Mamés. He will need to be at his best during training and friendlies to achieve his goal, but three La Liga clubs are already monitoring the situation closely. According to a report from Ramón Suso of Mundo Deportivo, Osasuna, Eibar, and Leganés have all expressed interest in signing the midfielder on loan this summer. Leganés had already requested to keep Vesga for another year before last season ended, while Osasuna and Eibar have since joined the conversation.
Joining any of the three clubs would give Vesga the opportunity to enjoy a starting role in La Liga. The same wouldn’t be true if he stayed at San Mamés, though he has shown the potential to challenge for a more prominent place in the team. Garitano is said to have liked what he saw from Vesga last season and believes he would offer depth and versatility in the midfield. Despite the potential offers, the 26-year-old is only thinking about earning his place at Athletic. With a contract that is set to expire in 2021, the argument could be made that Mikel Vesga is fighting for his Athletic career.
