Beñat Returns To Training, Iñigo Martinez And Iñigo Lekue Continue Recovery
Athletic’s first day of training in Germany is in the books. The morning began with running drills followed by two full sessions on the field. Gaizka Garitano has 30 players at his disposal, including Unai Simón and Unai Nuñez who have made their returns after being granted extended vacations. However, not everyone was able to participate in the drills.
Iñigo Martinez and Iñigo Lekue ran with the team in the morning but were still unable to fully join their teammates as they are both recovering from muscle injuries. The two defenders jogged with trainer Xabi Clemente and spent the evening session working out in the indoor facilities. Neither is expected to play in the two friendlies this weekend.
On the other hand, Beñat was able to return to training after missing the last two sessions at Lezama, as well as Saturday’s friendly, with discomfort. The midfielder acted as a wildcard during scrimmages which is generally the last step before being fully reincorporated into the group. Beñat trained without any issues and could be available for the team’s friendlies while in Germany.
Athletic will train twice again on Tuesday before enjoying a day off on Wednesday. President Aitor Elizegi will then join the team on Thursday for the remainder of the trip. Garitano will continue pushing the players to improve while also analyzing who should stay and who should leave with the squad needing to be trimmed down before the start of the season.
