Athletic Club Fielding Loan Offers For Hodei Oleaga
Hodei Oleaga began the preseason in direct competition with new signing Jokin Ezkieta for the third goalkeeper role at Athletic. The winner would essentially spend the year playing with Bilbao Athletic while always being available if needed by the first team. Meanwhile, the other would go on loan to the Segunda in order to play regular minutes and continue developing.
Manager Gaizka Garitano tipped his hand during Saturday’s friendly against Arenas when Ezkieta came on to play the entire second half while Oleaga didn’t see the field. Oleaga was then left out of the 30-man squad that traveled to Germany for the week and will spend his time training with Bilbao Athletic. There’s been no formal announcement, but Garitano appears to have chosen Ezkieta as the third goalkeeper for the upcoming season.
A few clubs from the Segunda have already shown interest in signing Oleaga and Athletic are actively fielding loan offers for the 22-year-old. Unless something changes, the goalkeeper will be leaving for the season and Athletic will look for the best destination where Oleaga will have the opportunity to prove himself with consistent playing time. For now, Oleaga will continue training with Bilbao Athletic alongside Andoni López who is also waiting to be sent out on loan.
