Athletic And Deportivo Negotiating Purchase Option As Part Of Andoni López Loan Agreement
When preseason training began back on 4 July there were 33 total players in the Athletic squad. Manager Gaizka Garitano was tasked with trimming the team and it didn’t take long before the Mister started to make decisions. Left-back Andoni López was soon informed that he was not a part of the plans this season and would be sent out on loan.
López was left out of Saturday’s friendly against Arenas and didn’t travel with the squad for Athletic’s trip to Germany. Instead, he’s been training with Bilbao Athletic while the club is working to finalize his move away. Deportivo have been leading the race to sign the 23-year-old and an agreement is close.
According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, López will be signing with Deportivo in the coming days. The two clubs have been in talks for the past two weeks and are in the final stages of negotiations. Including a potential purchase option as part of the loan deal is one of the remaining subjects that must be addressed. Doing so would allow Deportivo to sign López outright from Athletic.
Andoni López has long been considered one of the most promising defenders coming out of Lezama, but without a clear path to the first team he will have to leave in order to play regular minutes. Deportivo are prepared to offer López a starting role and the transfer could be announced very soon.
