Iñigo Martinez Likely To Miss Friendlies In Germany With Muscle Injury
Athletic arrived in Germany on Sunday night where they will spend the next week training and playing friendlies against Paderborn and Borussia Monchengladbach. Gaizka Garitano called up 30 players for the trip, including Unai Simón and Unai Nuñez who have made their returns from an extended summer vacation. Iñigo Martinez also traveled with the squad, though it’s likely he won’t be fully involved throughout the week.
Martinez returned from his own vacation on Monday but wasn’t incorporated into the group. At the time, sources said that the club was being careful with the defender who played heavy minutes last season and that he would fully join his teammates during the trip to Germany. The 28-year-old has been training separately indoors but now it appears as though there’s another reason for his absences at Lezama.
According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Martinez is dealing with a slight muscle injury which has prevented him from training fully. The defender did travel with the team but is not expected to play in either friendly this weekend. Garitano will not risk Martinez as the idea is to have him fit and ready for the start of the season on 16 August against Barcelona.
