Beñat Misses Training Ahead Of Arenas Club Friendly
Athletic football is just around the corner. The Lions will play their first friendly of the summer on Saturday when they travel to Fadura to face off with neighboring Arenas Club. It will be the first chance for players to convince the manager that they deserve a place in the team for the upcoming season, but not everyone will be able to feature against Arenas.
Beñat was forced to leave training early on Thursday with discomfort. The midfielder was seen talking with Dr. Paco Angulo before walking inside the facilities. Sources assured that the 32-year-old wasn’t dealing with anything serious but Beñat was absent for Friday morning’s session at Lezama. The team will train again on Friday night and the midfielder isn’t expected to be available.
Even if Beñat was simply given time off to rest, which seems to be the case, it’s highly unlikely that he will play in Saturday’s friendly. There’s no reason to risk an injury at this point of the preseason so the midfielder is expected to sit this one out. Meanwhile, this presents a prime opportunity for Unai López, Mikel Vesga, and Oihan Sancet to see minutes against Arenas and show what they can contribute to the team.
Iñigo Martinez and Iñigo Lekue will miss the friendly as well. Martinez has been following a lighter training schedule apart from his teammates in order to be slowly reintroduced after playing heavy minutes last season. Lekue suffered a pulled muscle last week and still hasn’t been able to return to training. Unai Simón and Unai Nuñez are still enjoying their summer vacations and will join the squad for Sunday’s trip to Germany.
