Rafa Alkorta Confirms Cristian Ganea And Andoni López Will Leave On Loan
Thursday’s press conference was a time of celebration for Yeray who has renewed his contract with Athletic through 2026 with a €70 million release clause. The defender answered several questions from reporters, but Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta was also asked to comment on a few other topics while in front of the microphone. Reports claim that Cristian Ganea and Andoni López will leave on loan and Alkorta confirmed it when questioned.
“We are working to find the best situation for them to play, for them to be happy playing football, and for us to be able to see them. We are looking for the best way out for Ganea and Andoni López because they are in complicated positions in the first team and they already know Garitano’s opinion. We’re looking for a place for them to enjoy their football.”
Athletic have made only one transfer this summer, bringing in Barcelona goalkeeper Jokin Ezkieta who refused to renew his expiring contract with the Catalans. However, the Lions are also interested in signing Monaco starlet Robert Navarro and still monitoring Javi Martinez’s situation at Bayern Munich. “We never close the door to additions as long as the market allows us to sign someone”, was all Alkorta would say about the possibility of other signings.
Apart from Yeray, Athletic have also put a priority on renewing Unai Nuñez’s contract with the defender’s current release clause set at €30 million. Alkorta didn’t want to get into the topic at the time and would only respond with, “Unai Nuñez has a contract until 2023” when asked about the ongoing negotiations. The club is also in renewal talks with Raúl García who is entering the final year of his contract.
