Ruben Azcona Ready To Lead The Attack For CD Basconia
Ruben Azcano is a proven goalscorer. The striker smashed scoring records throughout his years at Lezama and it came as no surprise when he was officially promoted to CD Basconia last summer despite being the youngest player at Juvenil A the prior season. Expectations were extremely high, but things didn’t go as well as Azcona had hoped in his first campaign as a professional footballer.
By the end of the season, Azcona had featured in 28 matches but only 10 times as a starter. He logged a total of 984 minutes with Ewan Urain heavily favored as the starting striker. Still, Azcona managed to score 7 goals and became more impactful and comfortable as the season wore on. Often used as a special substitute late in games, the 18-year-old was able to make his presence felt even when he wasn’t putting shots into the back of the net.
This summer, Azcona watched as 9 of his Basconia teammates were promoted to Bilbao Athletic. He was left off the list. Having had a year to adjust to life in the Tercera, he’s ready to lead the attack at Basconia this season. The 18-year-old will be expected to feature heavily in the starting lineup and has a chip on his shoulder to prove that he can perform at a high level.
With a squad heavily comprised of players promoted from Juvenil A, many of whom played with Azcona at Juvenil B two years ago, the 18-year-old will have to be a leader and must step up for Basconia to have a successful season. There’s no doubting that Ruben Azcona has the quality to be one of the best strikers in the Tercera and now he will have the chance to show it.
