Iker Muniain gets medical attention after a blow to his ankle during training (MD)

Athletic have been relatively lucky so far this preseason when it comes to injuries. Only Iñigo Lekue has been forced to miss time after the defender pulled his right quad last week. Injuries at this time of the year can be devastating as players miss out on important instruction and usually don’t begin the season as prepared as their teammates.

Wednesday morning’s training session nearly saw another Lions sidelined. While the squad was split into two teams for a scrimmage, Gaizka Larrazabal slid into Iker Muniain’s ankle and the captain went down in pain. Muniain would then leave the field to receive medical attention which always brings with it the fear of something serious. Luckily, the 26-year-old returned to training and was able to finish the session with his teammates without any issues.

The training session gave a glimpse into Gaizka Garitano’s vision for the team, albeit without the entire squad available. During the scrimmage a team comprised of Ander Capa, Mikel San José, Dani Vivian, Mikel Balenziaga, Beñat, Oihan Sancet, Ibai Gómez, Iker Muniain, Iñigo Córdoba, and Iñaki Williams faced off against Oscar De Marcos, Yeray, Peru Nolaskoain, Yuri Berchiche, Unai López, Dani García, Gaizka Larrazabal, Iñigo Vicente, Asier Villalibre, and Kenan Kodro. Mikel Vesga, Rúal García, and Aritz Aduriz rotated into the sides.

During the scrimmage, the goalkeepers trained separately while Cristian Ganea and Andoni López worked with fitness coach Juan Iribarren. Both left-backs have already been informed that they are not part of the plans this season and will be sent on loan. Little by little, Garitano’s system is coming together during every training session and the team is glad that Muniain didn’t suffer a serious injury.
