Athletic Keeping A Close Eye On Javi Martinez’s Situation At Bayern Munich
Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta hasn’t been shy about Athletic’s interest in bringing back Javi Martinez. Before the summer began the Lions were seriously pursuing the midfielder until it looked certain that he would stay at Bayern Munich for at least one more year. President Aitor Elizegi even went as far to say that paying €20 million for the 30-year-old wouldn’t be a problem.
Martinez was an important player for manager Nico Kovač last season and has been expected to stay in the team. However, with the Bavarians reportedly signing Espanyol midfielder Marc Roca for €40 million, some believe that Martinez could become available for the right price. Athletic haven’t given up hope of a reunion.
If Bayern Munich complete the signing of Marc Roca, Athletic will return for Martinez according to sources. The midfielder was said to be interesting in returning to San Mamés when the club first reached out to his representatives in February and that hasn’t changed. Still, Martinez is content in Germany and won’t leave unless Bayern decides to sell him which isn’t the case at this point. Athletic hope they will be able to convince the Bavarians to negotiate his transfer but know it will be extremely difficult and highly unlikely this summer.
