Iñigo Martinez Following Lighter Schedule To Start Preseason Training
Iñigo Martinez was one of four Athletic players who were given an extended vacation due to serving on international duty. The defender was part of the Basque National Team that traveled to Panama at the end of the season then returned to play with Spain through 10 June. Martinez visited Lezama last Thursday to work on his own in the gym and the club announced that he would officially report to training on Monday.
Garitano put the team through two sessions on Monday, but Martinez wasn’t present for either. The 28-year-old successfully completed his medical in the morning but trained apart from the group in the gym the rest of the day. Martinez was once again missing on Tuesday as he continued working in the indoor facilities. Fans have started to worry that the defender could be dealing with an injury, but that isn’t the case.
Martinez played the third-most minutes last season, behind only Yuri Berchiche and Iñaki Williams, despite being sidelined at the start of the campaign due to an injury. Playing international football has demanded even more from the defender and the medical staff and coaches made the decision to slowly work the player back into the group this summer.
In order to ensure that Iñigo Martinez is fully fit and rested when the season begins, he will follow a lighter schedule than his teammates this week before fully joining the group when the Lions travel to Germany on Sunday. Unai Simón and Unai Nuñez are also expected to report to training for the trip abroad and are the only two players still on vacation after Oihan Sancet returned last week.
