Sporting Reportedly In Talks To Sign Athletic’s Cristian Ganea On Loan
Preseason training is in full swing and Athletic manager Gaizka Garitano is facing a daunting task. With the Lions hoping to challenge for Europe this year, the manager must trim the 33-man squad down to around 24 which means that some players will have to leave this summer. The Mister has promised to give everyone the chance to earn a place in the team, but for some a decision has already been made.
Cristian Ganea has already been told that he is not a part of Garitano’s plans this season. With Yuri Berchiche and Mikel Balenziaga standing in his way, the Romanian will not have chances and will return to the Segunda on loan. Ganea enjoyed success with Numancia in the second half of last season, though he’s likely headed for a different destination.
Reports in Asturias claim that Sporting Gijon have already contacted Athletic to express their interest in signing Ganea on loan. After the departures of Javi Noblejas and Roberto Canella, the club desperately needs to strengthen the left side of the field and Sporting Director Miguel Torrecilla has identified Ganea as the top target. Capable of playing at left-back or further up the field, Ganea’s versatility could prove invaluable for the Segunda side.
Before the preseason began Ganea publically stated that he didn’t want to leave on loan because he felt as though he wouldn’t be able to prove himself. However, if he’s not going to have minutes at San Mamés the best thing for the 27-year-old is to be on the field every weekend somewhere else. Athletic will continue to field offers for Ganea who could possibly leave before the team travels to Germany on Sunday.
