Segunda Clubs Hoping To Sign Athletic Players On Loan

Training Squad

There won’t be room for everybody at Athletic Club this season (AC)

Every season clubs from the Segunda rely on signing players on loan to strengthen their squads and compete for promotion. Over the years Athletic has built strong relationships with many of these clubs which has benefited all parties greatly. This summer will be no different as several Lions could move to the Second Division in order to play regular minutes.

Gaizka Garitano currently has a squad of 33 players. The goal is to trim that number down to around 24 which means that some will be spending the season away on loan. While the manager analyzes the team during preseason training, nearly half of the club clubs from the Segunda are waiting for the chance to strengthen their squad with a player from Athletic.

So far, at least three players are set to leave. Peru Nolaskoain is close to joining Real Zaragoza, Cristian Ganea has attracted interest from the likes of Sporting, and Andoni López will be in need of minutes as well. Rayo would also like to bring back Unai López if possible. Meanwhile, Almeria are hoping to sign two Athletic starlets in Iñigo Vicente and Asier Villalibre, but Garitano must first decide if they will have a place in the first team.

While no specific players have been linked, Numancia are also looking to add at least one Lion as are Mirandés who recently revealed Athletic legend Andoni Iraola as the club’s new manager. Several players must convince Garitano this summer if they are going to stay at San Mamés, but those who fail to do so will have plenty of suitors when they leave on loan.
