Bilbao Athletic Kick Off Preseason Training At Lezama
Last year was a rollercoaster for Bilbao Athletic. A strong start to the season saw the Katxorros running away at the top of the table until a rash of injuries and coaching change saw the team fall out of the promotional playoffs. There’s been a lot of turnover in the squad this summer, which is always the case for a reserve team, but when the season begins the goal will once again be to finish in the top four.
The quest for promotion officially began today as new manager Joseba Etxeberria held his first press conference and the players took the field to start preseason training. With 11 returning from last year, three coming back from loan, nine promoted from Lezama, and one outside signing (Antxon Jaso, Burgos) there will be a total of 24 players competing for minutes this summer.
It will be up to Etxeberria to put together the strongest possible team as some will likely have to leave on loan. There is also a good chance that Oihan Sancet, Dani Vivian, and one of Hodei Oleaga or Jokin Ezkieta will spend most of their time with Bilbao Athletic this year while also being available to the first team. Above all else, the ultimate goal is to prepare each player to take the next step in their career and it all began today.
The schedule for the 2019/2020 season was officially announced on Monday as well, which will see Bilbao Athletic kick off the campaign on the road against Haro Deportivo in August. Before then, the Katxorros will play friendlies against several clubs that will be in the same group this year. The full fixtures list can be found here:
