Iñigo Lekue Diagnosed With Moderate Quad Strain In Right Thigh
Athletic saw the first injury of the preseason on Tuesday and there was fear that it was a serious one. While putting in a cross at the end of training, Iñigo Lekue collapsed and laid on the ground in clear pain. After being helped to the bench, the 26-year-old then left the field with Doctor Paco Angulo while grimacing severely. Being a non-contact injury there was serious concern.
Initial tests revealed that Lekue had suffered a muscle injury to his right quadriceps, a group of four muscles that make up the thigh, and that further tests would be carried out. On Wednesday the club announced that Lekue has been diagnosed with a “moderate strain” in his right quad, commonly known as a pulled muscle.
Lekue has certainly avoided what could have been a much more serious injury and shouldn’t be sidelined for an extended period of time. After recovering, Lekue will be able to rejoin his teammates in training and the Lezama product is hopeful that he will be able to compete in the first friendly of the summer which will take place on 20 July against Arenas Club.
This summer will be an important time in Lekue’s career. Last season he dealt with a fractured ankle and lower back surgery which severely limited his minutes. However, Lekue’s versatility could be a valuable weapon for manager Gaizka Garitano. For that to happen, Lekue will first have to prove that he deserves a place in the Athletic squad by having a strong preseason.
