Athletic Legend Andoni Iraola Named New Manager Of Mirandés
It was no surprise to anyone when Athletic legend Andoni Iraola went into coaching immediately following his retirement from football. Considered by most to be the greatest right-back to ever play for Athletic, Iraola left the club in 2015 to sign with New York City FC where he spent one season before officially hanging up his boots. Iraola then accepted a coaching role at the famous Basque academy Antiguoko which he attended as a player before joining Lezama in 1999.
Iraola had always shown a brilliant mind for the game and everyone expected him to become a coach once his playing days were over. Last summer he would be given his first true managerial role, taking over Cypriot club AEK Larnaca. Iraola would lead Larnaca to the Cypriot Cup title at the beginning of the season, but the team began to struggle by December and a coaching change was eventually made in January.
On Wednesday, Iraola officially returned to the sidelines when he was announced as the new manager of CD Mirandés on a one-year contract. For a club that just earned promotion back to the Segunda, Mirandés believe that Iraola can take the team to the next level.
“First of all, I want to thank the club for this opportunity”, said Iraola during his presentation later in the day. “This position brings great responsibility, but in that responsibility there is also the illusion to do well. The philosophy of the club and the idea that we have of doing things go hand in hand. We want to be daring and play on our opponent’s side of the field. Despite the short time until the season begins, we are clear about what we want to achieve.”
Andoni Iraola had expressed his interest in coaching at Lezama earlier this year, but also made it clear that he would analyze all the offers he received to make the best decision. Coaching in the Segunda is a big step forward for the Athletic legend who will now be tasked with keeping Mirandés competitive in the second division and avoiding relegation in what will be a competitive season.
